  • 1985 - Mikhial Gorbachev succeeds Konstantin Chernenko as Chairman of the Communist party (setting up the end of the cold war).
  • 1996 - Garth Brooks said that Hootie and the Blowfish had done more for music that year than he did, so he refused to accept his American Music Award for Favorite Overall Artist.

  • 1950 - Pat Simmons (Doobie Brothers) was born
  • 1953 - Robin Zander (Cheap Trick) was born
  • 1978 - Terry Kath (Chicaco) died (Chicaco has never been the same since)
  • 1986 - Chuck Berry is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the first induction dinner, held in New York City. He is inducted by Rolling Stone Keith Richards, who said, “It’s hard for me to induct Chuck Berry, because I lifted every lick he ever played!”
  • 1986 - Ray Charles, James Brown, Buddy Holly, Jerry lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, and Little Richard, are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the first induction dinner.

Terry Kath was the soul to the band Chicago. He brought blues and jazz into rock which became the real sound of Chicago (even today).
