Today in Rock (July 17)

  • 1942 - Spencer Davis (Spencer Davis Group - guitar) was born.
  • 1948 - Mick Tucker (Sweet) was born.
  • 1949 - Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath - bass) was born.
  • 1959 - Billy Holiday died.
  • 1961 - ‘West Side Story’, the film version of the musical, is released. The film features Natalie Wood and Rita Moreno, and is choreographed by Jerome Robbins.
  • 1968 - “Yellow Submarine” (the movie) premiered. (Does it need any comments?).
  • 1971 - “JC” (Jimi Hendrix’s manager) died.
  • 1972 - A bomb destroys the Rolling Stones’ sound equipment at the Montreal Forum. It is never determined who is responsible.
  • 1988 - Aerosmith and Guns N’ Roses begin a joint tour in Hoffman Estates, IL. What’s interesting is the Aerosmith rider that requires Guns N’ Roses to confine their drug and alcohol abuse to their dressing room. The recovering Aerosmith don’t want temptation within sight.
  • 1990 - The first Lollapalooza Tour is launched Phoenix. The Alt. Rock trek, conceived by Perry Farrell, frontman for Jane?s Addiction, features Farrell’s band, Living Colour, Nine Inch Nails and Siouxsie & The Banshees.
  • 1996 - The Smashing Pumpkins fire their drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin, following the death of their keyboardist, Jonathan Melvoin. The two were shooting up heroin together when Melvoin OD’ed. He later cleans up and re-joins the band for a short while before they break up.
  • 2007 - 11 years later, The Smashing Pumpkins debut their comeback album, “Zeitgeist” - it’s their best selling album since the double LP “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness“.
  • 2008 - Rock Fest begins in Cadot, WI. Puddle Of Mudd, Stone Temple Pilots, Three Days Grace, Live and Godsmack perform during the four day event.

  • 1952 - Steward Copeland (The Police - drummer) was born.
  • 1966 - Jack Bruce (bass), Ginger Baker (drums), and Eric Clapton (guitar) form Cream.
  • 1971 - Ed Kowalczyk (Live - lead singer) was born.
  • 1981 - Jefferson Starship release their “Modern Times” album with Grace Slick returning to sing a few songs.
  • 1981 - Harry Chaplin (Cat’s in the Cradle) died.
  • 1996 - John Panozzo (Styx - drummer) died of a gastrointestinal hemorrhage.
  • 2008 - Rush is the first musical act to perform on Comedy Central’s “Colbert Report“. It is also the first time since 1975 that Rush appears live on TV. They perform the song “Tom Sawyer“. Neil Young also performed on CBS’s “Late Show with David Letterman“.

  • 1952 - Jeff Carlisi (.38 Special - guitar) was born.
  • 1956 - Joe Satriani (guitarist) was born.
  • 1958 - Marc Bell (a.k.a. “Marky Ramone” - Ramones - drummer) was born.
  • 1958 - Julia Lennon (John Lennon’s mother) died in a car accident near Liverpool, England.
  • 1967 - Van Morrison scores first solo US hit with “Brown-Eyed Girl“. (Nice way to debut on the charts)
  • 1970 - Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) release their very popular “Cosmo’s Factory” album.
  • 1973 - Ray Davies quits The Kinks due to exhaustion and personal problems. He un-quit a week later.
  • 2003 - Bruce Springsteen (with the E Street Band) plays the first of ten shows at Giants Stadium in New Jersey. 55,000 attend opening night.
  • 2008 - John Mellencamp’s “Life, Death, Love And Freedom” is released using the CODE audio format. The album’s producer T-Bone Burnett, along with a group of engineers, developed the high-fidelity technology. The set is available at Starbucks stores, as well as other locations
  • 2008 - Tunes by Stone Temple Pilots, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Wolfmother, Faith No More, KISS, the Ramones, Queens Of The Stone Age and Weezer are on the Rock Band video game. Rock Band Track Pack Volume 1 is available for the Wii and PlayStation2 systems.
  • 2008 - The Very Best Of Foreigner, a two-CD compilation is out. The set includes live tracks and the single “Too Late,” the band’s first original studio recording since 1994. (How many greatest hits albums will they have?)

  • 1940 - Ringo Starr (The Beatles - drummer)was born.
  • 1948 - Larry Rheinhardt (Iron Butterfly) was born.
  • 1962 - Mark White (Spin Doctors) was born.
  • 1964 - The Rolling Stones made their TV appearance debut on ITV’s “Thank Your Lucky Stars“. They perform “Come On” in matching suits. (I guess the matching suits didn’t do so well for them?).
  • 1968 - The Yardbirds disband. The band featured some legends as Eric Clapton, Jeff Bech, and Jummy Page (not at the same time). Page tries to re-launch “The New Yardbirds” but they later become Led Zeppelin.
  • 1973 - Wings release “Live and Let Die“.
  • 1980 - Led Zeppelin plays their last concert with the original members in Eissporthalle in Berlin.
  • 2006 - Syd Barret (founding member of Pink Floyd - lead singer & guitar) died.
  • 2007 - The Earth Concert Series, US edition is performed in East Rutherford, NJ. Sime titles include The Smashing Pumpkins, Bon Jovi, Korn, The Police, Roger Waters. The London show features the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Beastie Boys, and Genesis.
  • 2008 - Construction begins on the first of 5 Detriot area low-income homes funded by Jon Bon Jovi’s “Philadelphia Soul Charitable Foundation” as well as Satrun car company and the Detroit’s branch of Habitat for Humanity”.

  • 1925 - Bill Haley (“Rock Around the Clock” - a.k.a. the accidental father of Rock & Roll)) was born.
  • 1964 - The Beatles’ premier album, “A Hard Day’s Night” premiers in London.
  • 1965 - Jefferson Airplane is formed.
  • 1971 - Louis Armstrong (jazz) died.
  • 1973 - Queen releases their debut single, “Keep Yourself Alive“.

I guess this will be the last “Today In Rock” entry until they come back from vacation.

  • 1949 - Roy Britten (Bruce Springsteens’s “E Street Band”) was born.
  • 1952 - Johnny Colla (Huey Lewis and the News - guitar and sax) was born.
  • 1962 -Jimi Hendrix is discharged from the army. The original story claims Jimi broke his ankle on a parachute jump. However, evidence suggests Hendrix faked being gay to get out. It was the very same ploy Doors singer Jim Morrison used a few years later to avoid the draft. (I guess they didn’t have don’t ask, don’t tell back then?).
  • 1965 - Dave Parsons (Bush) was born.
  • 1969 - Noel Redding (bass) leaves the Jimi Hendrix Experience to start his own group, Fat Mattress. (We all make bad decisions).
  • 1973 - Brian Eno quits Roxy Music.
  • 1981 - Bruce Springsteen plays the first (of six sold out shows) gig at the Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey (is there anything big in NJ he isn’t involved with?).
  • 1990 - MTV and Chauncey Street Productions launch “Turn It Up,” a new rock & roll game show.
  • 1991 - Guns ‘n’ Roses lead singer Axl Rose jumped off the stage and attacked a fan who was videotaping a concert outside of St. Louis. In the ensuing riot, 60 people were hurt and the venue was wrecked.
