  • 1943 - George Harrison (Beatles - guitar) was born.
  • 1947 - Lonnie Turner (Steve Miller Band - bass / vocals) was born.
  • 1950 - George Thorogood (Bad to the Bone) was born.
  • 1976 - The Eagles Greates Hits (1971-1975) officially goes platinum with one million sales. It continues on to be the top selling album of all time.
  • 1982 - At the BRIT Awards in London, the Police are named Best British Group. A few hours later, on across the ocean, they earn a Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance (“Don’t Stand So Close To Me”).
  • 1992 - Kurt Kobain and Courtney Love married.
  • 1998 - Virgin Records sues the Smashing Pumpkins claiming non-compliance with their contact. The label contends an album was due three months earlier. Meanwhile, the group is trying to get out of the deal.
  • 1999 - The record industry certifies that “Garbage” and “Version 2.0” (both by Garbage) have sold one million and two million copies, respectively.
  • 2006 - U2’s Bono is one of a 191 nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize. The singer’s efforts to cancel Third World debt make him a contender for the $1.3 million honor which is awarded later in the year. He didn’t win - but it’s an honor just to be nominated
  • 2007 - Sammy Hager, serves as the grand marshal for the Stater Bros. 300 race at the California Speedway in Fontana, CA, the Red Rocker’s hometown. (I guess he really can’t drive 55?).
  • 2009 - Comcast and U2 announce an agreement to present high-definition performances to subscribers. There’s HD footage from concert and promotional clips from throughout the band’s career.

  • 1950 - Steve Priest (Sweet - bass) was born.
  • 1950 - Brad Whitford (Aerosmith - guitar) was born.
  • 1955 - Howard Jones (solo - Things Can Only Get Better) was born.
  • 1962 - Michael Wilton (Queensryche - guitar) was born.
  • 1972 - Elvis and Pricilla Presley seperate after four years of marriage. They had one child, Lisa-Marie.
  • 1993 - Little Richard gets a Lifetime Achievement Award from NARAS (the Grammys). Richard grouses that he’s getting the award the night before the annual Grammy show rather than at the ceremony itself.
  • 1995 - Melvin Franklin (The Temptations) died.
  • 2000 - Carlos Santana picks up several Grammys for his comeback album, “Supernatural.” Elton John gets a Living Legend Award and says the whole awards thing is B.S. Elton gets it right
  • 2009 - Ticketmaster reaches a settlement with the New Jersey Attorney General’s office regarding its controversial handling of sales of Bruce Springsteen concert tickets. As part of the deal, the company pays the state $350,000 in legal fees and promises, for one year, to stop automatically linking to its TicketsNow subsidiary, which re-sells ducats at inflated prices. Ticketmaster also offers restitution to Springsteen fans who had filed complaints about their difficulties buying tickets

  • 1946 - Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath - guitar) was born.
  • 1949 - Mark Andes (Spin / Heart - bass) was born.
  • 1957 - Falco (Rock Me Amadeus) was born.
  • 1974 - In response to the Grammy Awards, Dick Clark launches the American Music Awards where the record buying public vote.
  • 1974 - KISS makes their TV debut on Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert.
  • 1980 - Bon Scott (AC/DC) died.
  • 1994 - Green Day’s “Dookie” begins a two year stay on the U.S. album chart. The group’s third studio album rises to #2 and sells over 12 million copies.
  • 2006 - Bon Jovi performs prior to the Daytona 500 stock car race at Florida’s legendary Daytona International Speedway. The band’s show is part of the Sprint Tribute to America, which honors men and women in the United States Armed Forces. “Bon Jovi is a great fit,” says Sprint Nextel executive Michael Robichaud.
  • 2009 - Songs by Paul McCartney and Wings and Bob Seger are on track packs for Guitar Hero: World Tour. McCartney and Wings contribute “Junior’s Farm” and “Jet.” Seger is represented by “Her Strut” and “Old Time Rock and Roll.”
  • 2009 - Electric Light Orchestra’s (ELO) bassist, Kelly Groucutt dies after suffering a heart attack.

  • 1933 - Yoko Ono was born.
  • 1947 - Dennis De Young (Styx - vocal / keyboard) was born. (He started his career as a music teacher)
  • 1953 - Robbie Bachman (Bachman Turner Overdive / BTO - drummer) was born.
  • 1962 - After joining the marines, the Everly Brothers (Phil and Don) sing on the Ed Sullivan show in uniform.
  • 1954 - John Travolta was born.
  • 1968 - David Gilmour replaces Syd Barret in Pink Floyd. Syd was suffering from a mental breakdown and was checked into a psychiatric hospital and eventually goes into seclusion.
  • 1974 - KISS releases their self-titled debut album.
  • 1985 - Bill Wyman (bass) announces he is leaving the Rolling Stones. It takes him 7 years to live up to that statement.
  • 1995 - Bob Stinson (The Replacements) died.
  • 2005 - The three surviving members of Alice In Chains perform at a tsunami-relief benefit concert in Seattle and raise over $100,000. Filling in for the late Layne Stayley are Tool/A Perfect Circle frontman Maynard James Keenan, Puddle of Mudd’s Wes Scantlin and Damageplan’s Pat Lachman. Former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic hosted the event.
  • 2005 - Cheap Trick’s Rick Neilson appears on the Food Network’s Inside Dish providing a tour of the Chicago restaurant he owns, Piece Brewery and Pizzeria.

  • 1967 - The Beatles release Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane.
  • 1972 - Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day - vocals / guitar) was born.
  • 1972- Pink Floyd begin a four-night stand at London’s Rainbow Theatre during which they premiere Dark Side of the Moon (a.k.a. Eclipse). (That must have been some show!)
  • 1973 - Free give their last concert in Hollywood, FL. Singer Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke stay together and form Bad Company.
  • 1976 - The Eagle’s “Greatest Hits” is released. It goes on to become the all-time top selling album in the US.
  • 1990 - Aerosmith appear in a skit on Saturday Night Live (Wayne’s World).
  • 2005 - The 4th Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp kicks off in Hollywood. Counselors include John Anderson of Yes, Men At Work’s Colin Hay, Jim Keltner of the Traveling Wilbury’s and the Cars’ Elliot Easton. Roger Daltrey, Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers and the E Street Band’s Nils Lofgen also contribute to the curriculum.
  • 005 - Motley Crüe - that’s Vince Neil (vocals), Mick Mars (guitar), Nikki Sixx (bass), and Tommy Lee (drums) - set out on a VH-1 and VH-1 Classic sponsored the reunion tour, “Mötley Crüe: Red White & Crüe Tour 2005…Better Live Than Dead.” Fort Lauderdale is the first stop.

  • 1961 - Andy Taylor (Duran Duran - guitar) was born.
  • 1965 - Dave Lombardo (Slayer - drummer) was born.
  • 1972 - Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters - drummer) was born.
  • 1975 - Lou Reed’s concert in Rome ends in a riot when a political group attempts to halt the show and the police use tear gas to control the crowd. During the melee, Reed is hit with a brick.
  • 1993 - Nirvana wins the Best International Newcomer category at the 12th annual BRIT Awards in London.
  • 2005 - Jimi Hendrix memorabila goes on auction with a 1965 Fender Stratocaster guitar fetching nearly $190,000. The London auction also features a poem written by Hendrix in 1967 and an autographed copy of the Experience’s first single, “Hey Joe.”
  • 2006 - Kid Rock starts a 2 month US tour in Hollywood, FL.

Shappy’s Father

If you listened to the show this morning you know that Shappy’s father passed away this past weekend. I shot Paul and email to see if they have any information on where people can send flowers or make a donation in his father’s name and he did not have one at this time. If anything like this is announced I will post it here on this site.

YouCantWin.net would like to express our deepest condolences to Shappy for his loss. Losing a parent is never easy for anyone.

  • 1944 - Mick Avory (Kinks - drummer) was born.
  • 1945 - John Helliwell (Supertramp - sax) was born.
  • 1947 - David Brown (Santana - bass) was born.
  • 1960- Mickey Craig (Culture Club) was born.
  • 1966 - Nat “King” Cole died.
  • 1976 - Brandon Boyd (Incubus -vocal) was born.
  • 2007 - Chris Cornell leaves Audioslave.
  • 2007 - Yes singer Jon Anderson plays the first of two shows with the School of Rock All-Stars in Glenside, PA. The All-Stars are from a Philadelphia-based music-education program for young people aged 7-18. Anderson appeared in an ‘03 documentary about the program.
  • 2008 - Carlos Santana performs in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It’s the guitarist’s first concert in the Middle East. “Santana is one of the most requested artists here,” says Elissa Murtaza, one of the show’s organizers.
  • 2010 - The Blur Rockumentary No Distance Left Behind is available on DVD. The film, directed by Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern, is on one disc one with a full-length concert on the second

  • 1967 - The Beatles start recording “A Day In The Life.” The song has three distinct sections – the open (“I read the news today, oh boy”) and close (I’d love to turn you on”) written and sung by John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s middle part (“Woke up, fell out of bed, dragged a comb across my head”). 40 musicians work on the track.
  • 1972 - T-Rex makes their US debut in Seattle.
  • 1979 - Rod Stewart beats out the Village People (“Y.M.C.A.”), Chic (“Le Freak”) and Olivia Newton-John (“A Little More Love”) to have the #1 song in the U.S. He does it with “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?”
  • 1979 - “Sultans of Swing” by Dire Straights is released.
  • 1997 - Brian Connolly (Sweet) died.
  • Motley Crue guitarist Mick Mars is hit with a $10 million palimony lawsuit by an ex-girlfriend who claims he broke a promise to financially support her throughout her life. The couple broke up the previous December
  • 2006 - Peter Gabriel and Yoko Ono are among the celebrities taking part in the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Prior to the lighting of the Olympic torch, Ono takes the stage, evoking the memory of her late husband, John Lennon, and making a plea for world peace. She is followed by Gabriel, who performs Lennon’s “Imagine.”
