Today in Rock (Sept 17)

They made the announcement on who is joining the show. Kelly Craig will be there one day a week and they hired Shappy full time as the production manager. They also announced that Dave Lamont will be back Friday mornings for a sports talk.

  • 1923 - Hank Williams was born.
  • 1933 - The first 33 1/3 RPM record and players are launched by RCA Victor. (a.k.a. “singles”, “12 inch”, etc..)
  • 1967 - The Doors make their only appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. Even though the band agrees to change the line “Girls we couldn’t get much higher” in the song “Light My Fire“, they sing it anyway. They are banned from the show.
  • 1967 - The Who play “My Generation” at the Smothers Brothers comedy tour. Keith Moon (drummer) places explosives in his drum to set off a flash explosion. Unfortunately, he doesn’t realize it was already done by the stage crew. The resulting blast damages Pete Townsend’s hearing.
  • 1975 - Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” goes gold.
  • 1976 - Queen host a free concert in London’s Hyde Park. 15,000 attend.
  • 1991 - Guns ‘N Roses release the “Use Your Illusion I & II” albums. It can be purchased either as a double album or two single albums.
  • 1997 - Fleetwood Mac reunite and starts a tour to support “The Dance” album.
  • 2006 - The cartoon likeness of the White Stripes, along with the voices of Meg and Jack, appear in a surreal segment of The Simpsons. Bart is a drummer who crashes into Meg’s kit. Following a brief chase the Stripes end up on a garbage barge.
