Today in Rock (Mar 31) and I’m going to miss YCW tomorrow..
Work has me going far far away, our of the reaches of the P&YR show tomorrow morning so I’ll miss the debut of YCW but I’ll try to catch a webcast when I’m back to post the question, answer, and prizes.
And now, today in rock.
- 1954 – Gee by Crows, claimed by many to be first genuine rock-and-roll hit, peaks at No. 6 on US R&B chart.
- 1960 – Angus Young (AC/DC) was born.
- 1967 – Robert Plant releases second pre-Led Zeppelin solo single, “Our Song”.
- 1973 – Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon hits UK LP chart.
- 1983 – “Beat It“, by Michael Jackson – which features a blistering Eddie Van Halen guitar solo – is premiered on MTV. Its high-energy fusion of rock and soul drives it to the top of the charts.
- 1995 – Selena, the Latin superstar is shot and killed by her former personal assistant and former president of her fan club, who had earlier been dismissed for embezzlement.
No YCW update tomorrow.
I have an overnight shift tonight (server migration) so chances are I’ll be sound asleep when YCW comes on tomorrow morning. Feel free to post the guessed answer in the forums (and I’ll update the site when I am coherent).
Will I apply for SDJ’s position?
I’ve received a few emails asking if I was going to apply for SDJ’s old position. At this time, I do not intend to apply for the position for many reasons (as much as I would love to work for the P&YR show).
The requirements (listed here) I do not meet them. Even though I do know how to use FrontPage (well, now it’s Web Expressions) and DreamWeaver, I prefer not to use them (nothing beats notepad for web programming) and my knowledge of PHP is extremely limited (this site is just a Wordpress blog with a fancy template) plus the call for PHP usually turns into a call for MySQL also, which I am limited to (but I am learning phpMyAdmin).
Also, I am content in my current IT position which I think would pay more than what they would pay a web programmer (not 100% but pretty sure) and running this site would definately be a conflict of interest with the show (and I have to admit, this is probably my most entertaining web project). Nothing like a project that you have to listen to a radio show, one that you enjoy listening to, to keep current.
But, for the show people, to add an image to a site:
< img src="(location of the image)" >
(take out the spaces before and after the brackets and remove the parenthesis)
Is the basic of it, you can also add in width=”n” and height=”n” tags to force a size and alt=”text” to add in a descrption that appears when someone hovers over the image with their mouse pointer.
Local bands can now promte themselves in the forums
Growing up in New Hampshire, in between Boston, Mass, the University of New Hampshire, and Portsmouth, NH I had exposure to some great local talent. this ranged from some guy with a guitar at my college playing for tips to serving Bradly Delp (original lead singer for the band, Boston) in the seafood department I ran (don’t believe the story about him being a vegan his entire life).
While listening to my iPod tonight it jumped on an album I purchased years ago called “Localpalooza” where a local rock station, WHEB, had a concert series (like Lollapalooza) where they promoted local bands. Say Zusu, Heavens to Murgatriod, and the local favorite, Thanks to Gravity, and it came to me. Without the right promotions, these bands might never had made it. Imagine if no one helped Boston get off their feet and signed them up for their first gig. Would Brad have continued on building refrigerator coils while singing Beatles songs at night clubs?
With this, I decided to add in a section in the forums where local bands can promote themselves. I know it won’t be much now but it is free advertising for them and maybe some of us would be able to catch some of their shows. If you are in a local band (and “local” doesn’t have to be south Florida, I have 3 sections – “south Florida”, “Florida”, and anywhere else) feel free to pop in and post about your band (please read the rules first, though).

Welcome to the new and improved You Can’t Win (dot) net site! All of the information from the old site is posted on here, navigation is to the right. Feel free to check out the questions, hints, and prizes!
I may be playing with the layout as I find one that works, I’ve found many and so far this is the most appropriate theme I’ve been able to find, but I am still looking!
I hope you enjoy the new site, please feel free to swing by the forums and let us know what you think!
